ANZAC DAY

On April 25, 2008 we attended the ANZAC parade in Mittagong, Australia. This town is located about an hour away from Nowra. It's basically like our Memorial Day. The parade is very moving. There was a celebration at 0500 and again at 1000. I would guess there were a 100+ people including small children who attended. Dave wore is Navy blues (looking very sharp) and marched with the Australian HMAS Albatross military.

What is ANZAC Day? ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

Why is this day special to Australians? When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 14 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the allied navies. The plan was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. They landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war. Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Constantinople and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the "ANZAC legend" became an important part of the national identity of both nations. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and future.

One-lane bridge

On our trip to Mittagong last weekend, we crossed a one lane bridge. It was very old looking and felt a little odd crossing over. There wasn't anywhere to get out and take a picture so I did the best I could inside the car.

Our New & Used Car!!!

After hours of research we ended up buying a new Toyota Aurion. It's very nice equipped with a navigation system and hands free phone. This would be the the photo on the right. lol. Two weeks ago Dave and I were out just driving around and ran across this Russian beater. It's a really cool 2 seater stick shift. Dave looks like a little kid driving it. Boys and their toys! hehe...

Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley is about a 15 minute drive from Nowra. The drive was breath taking. It was a bit cloudy this morning.

Jervis Bay

On
April 19, 2008 (the morning of Dave's birthday) we attended a wedding on the beach. The guy Dave is replacing got married that morning. The wedding was at 0900 which wasn't the "norm" for us. However, it was very nice that morning with just enough sun to keep us warm. Needless to say, I was loving the ocean. It felt so good to get my feet in the sand. The water was very chilly but I wasn't complaining.

Sydney Aquarium

The next day we visited the Aquarium. It was pretty big with a lot of detailed information on all the poisonous animals in Australia. Basically, stay away from all spiders and snakes. Some of them were pretty scary looking. Go figure the first kangaroos we see were having a bit of fun. :)

Sydney Rugby Game

During our stay in Sydney, we met up with our buddy Swede caught some lunch at Darling Harbour and then attended a rugby game. It was like attending a professional football game. There were tons of people eating and drinking. The weather was perfect with a slight chill in the air.
